Ukraine Streets – Zaporojie

November 22, 2009 by Contributor

Streets in the City of Zaporojie Ukraine

Although as a visitor to the Ukraine you will probably not drive it is relatively easy. The streets on the main roadways are large and clean. The drivers are respectful and relatively sparse (the pictures in this post were taken at rush hour).

However, mini buses and regular buses for mass transportation are plentiful. As you can see sometimes mini buses travel within seconds of each other. I’m told that the mini bus routes are determined by organized crime and operators pay big money for specified routes. The larger buses are run by the government and pensioners can ride these buses and can be crowded with older folks and rift raft (drunks) because of their extremely low fare. (Mini buses cost all of 10 cents USD:-)

Finally, you will probably want to ride the mini buses, trolleys and regular buses just to obtain the experience but remember that to impress your Mail Order Bride you should break down and pay the $5.00 for a taxes (most rides around the city of Zaporojie will run $5-$7).

Cossack Fighters Last Stand

November 8, 2009 by Contributor

Cossack

Brought to you by LovedbyHer.com

The above Cossack fighter is a member of a team that reenacts the last battles of the cossack fighters on an island in Zaporojie Ukraine. There is a beautiful museum dedicated to these fighters on an island in Zaporojie (notice that because of the varying languages used in the Ukraine as it was dominated by different countries/regions even the cities spelling varies) which is a must see when traveling within the Ukraine.

Wiki reports that:

Towards the end of the 15th century, Zaporozhian Cossacks had established a Cossack host in the wild steppe (“дике поле” in Ukrainian) of Ukraine around the Dnieper River. In the 16th century, the Don Cossacks established another cossack host in the Don River basin. Other Cossack hosts were established later in the Southern Urals, Siberia and Caucasus.

The Dnieper Cossacks of Ukraine formed the Zaporozhian Sich centered around the fortified Dnieper islands. Initially a vassal of Poland-Lithuania, the increasing social and religious pressure from the Commonwealth caused them to proclaim an independent Cossack Hetmanate, initiating by a rebellion under Bohdan Khmelnytsky in the mid-17th century. Afterwards, the Treaty of Pereyaslavl with Russia brought most of the Ukrainian Cossack state under Russian control for the next three hundred years.[2]

The Don Cossack Host, allied with the Tsardom of Russia, began a systematic conquest and colonisation of lands to secure her borders on the Volga, the whole of Siberia, the Ural and the Terek Rivers.

In the 18th century the Russian Empire’s expansionist ambitions relied on ensuring the loyalty of Cossacks, which caused tension with their traditional independent lifestyle. This resulted in rebellions led by Stenka Razin, Kondraty Bulavin and Yemelyan Pugachev. In extreme cases whole Hosts could be dissolved, as was the fate of the Zaporozhian Sich in 1775. By the end of the 18th century, Cossacks were transformed into a special social estate; they served as border guards on national and internal ethnic borders (as was in the case in the Caucasus War) and regularly supplied men to conflicts such as the numerous Russo-Turkish Wars. In return they enjoyed vast social autonomy. This caused them to form a stereotypical portrayal of 19th century Russian Empire abroad and her government domestically.

During the Russian Civil War Cossack regions became centers for the Anti-Bolshevik White movement, a portion of whom would form the White emigration. The Don and Kuban Cossacks even formed short-lived independent states in their respective territories. With the victory of the Red Army, the Cossack lands were subjected to famine, and suffered extensive repressions. During the Second World War Cossacks fought for both the Soviet Union and for Nazi Germany, a choice which led to what has been called the ‘Betrayal of Cossacks’ by the Allied forces after the war, as the Soviet Union executed ‘repatriated’ Cossacks and again engaged in repressionary policies against their group. After the Collapse of the Soviet Union, the Cossack lifestyle and its ideas have made a return in Russia. Special Cossack units exist in the Russian Military, while Cossacks also have a parallel civil administration and police duties in their home territories that have become an integral part of contemporary society. There are Cossack organizations in Russia, Kazakhstan, Ukraine and other countries. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cossacks

Mail Order Brides – Halloween in the Ukraine

Halloween in the Ukraine

My Mail Order Bride is in the Ukraine this Halloween. As such, I’m watching the Dallas Cowboys destroy the Seattle Sea Hawks Football Team. But I miss her.

It has been a long journey with this girl. I knew that I loved her the first time I set eyes on her and despite the cross cultural marriage our children have meshed well and my family finally accepts her. I think the willingness of people from the Ukraine to accept everyone and to share so much love has really been instrumental. Family is important to these people.

Halloween wasn’t the same last night with just me handing out candy. My wife made such a deal about each child’s costume last year that she became a favorite in the neighborhood and all the little kids knew her name.

But every country has some form of fall festival even if they don’t call it Halloween (funny that here in the USA a “Christian Nation” we celebrate a demonic holiday:-) __) and so in the Ukraine they have crops coming in and carve pumpkins and visit neighbors where they share the fall crop of apples and apple cider.

My Mail Order Bride (now my wife) will be home in a week or so and I’m really looking forward to that. You couldn’t ask for a more loyal loving woman than a girl from the Ukraine.

Ukraine Markets are a good source to meet Beautiful Women

Market

I’m often ask how you can meet beautiful women in the Ukraine. The answer is obvious once you visit the Ukraine. They are everywhere. Beautiful women abound on the streets and are readily looking for Western and American men.

But one of my favorite places is the outdoor market. Every day there are outdoor markets selling goods on the street corner. You can purchase anything and everything from these markets and they have every bit as much credibility as the guy next door with the brick and mortar store. Indeed, it is likely they both have been in business the same amount of time.

Following the collapse of the Soviet Union there was a period where people had to scrounge for themselves. The government which owned their houses was not going to foreclose but it became a bartering community for many goods and services. Entrepreneurs began to spring up. I personally know a women that started buying left over or abandoned goods from the Odesa seaport. She started selling these on the street for cash to goods. Now she is one of the richest women in the city. Her Apartment looks like something from a New York Town Home on the inside but yet she stills continues to sell her goods day after day.

But I digress.

Many women purchase at these street shops. Because of the nature of these shops it is easy to strike up a conversation. If your Russian is limited and you are in a larger city someone that speaks broken English can help you. Other than that it is sign language. Recently, when in Kiev I met an American that was a welder. He was helping built children’s playgrounds for schools and daycares by donating his time. In exchange they gave him a place to stay, food and clothing. He said that in the three months that he had been there he had learned enough Russian to navigate around and speak to women. Would would have talked longer but a beautiful Ukraine Girl came by that caught his eye and off he went.

So, the moral to the story is get up and go to the Ukraine. The women are beautiful and they are everywhere. Such loyal and fragile creatures you may never meet. They will love and worship you like you are Brad Pitt and have millions even if you are a humble tailor.

Calling Your Ukraine Girlfriend. Mistake #9 (But go ahead and try it)

October 20, 2009 by Contributor

Calling the Ukraine

So you have met the girl of your dreams and you are sure if you could just speak to her you could seal the deal. Bad idea and here is why.

1. Most girls overstate their language ability. Like most foreigners your girl is likely to have told you that she speaks a little English. That is probably it. She can say, Hello, Goodbye and I speak little English. Two sentences into the conversation you realize you cant understand her and you need help. But when you terminate the call she doesn’t understand why and thinks you just blew her off. Dont expect a second chance.

2. If you live in the CST you are eight hours behind her in time zones. That means between her job, bus ride home and all else it is going to be difficult trying to talk with you.

3. Even if you luck out and find a girl that speaks a little English the culture difference is going to be huge. Things which you might say to a western girl could be highly insulting to a Ukraine girl.

4. There is going to be a difference in not only the language but the nature of language. For example if you call your American girlfriend your baby it is enduring. Call your Ukraine girlfriend your baby and it doesn’t get the same enduring response.

5. BUT, for you guys that must learn the hard way here is how to call the Ukraine on the cheap;

a. Get a Skype account. http://skype.com
b. Have both her cell phone (they all have them) and her home phone because sometimes one will have a better sound quality than the other and you never know which. My recommendation is to call her cell phone before you ask her to let you call her skype to skype (which is a free call) because the Internet Service in most parts of the Ukraine is the old dial up with regular drops. (You will want to know if she hung up on you as opposed to the internet dropped the call).
c. 380 is the country code for the Ukraine.
d. Do NOT tell her you “love” her until AFTER you have been to the Ukraine and dated her a few days/times. If you do it to soon you will come off as creepy and you will never hear from her again.

6. When she hangs up on you recognize that we warned you and use a translator for the next girl.
7. One more thing. These girls are like every other girl in the world. If you try to “buy” them with gifts they will certainly not turn you down. So know the difference between a girl that ask for gifts (get away from this type of girl because she is either using you or about to scam you) and girls that accept your gifts because you are to insecure to date them without flashing your money (on the later you are the idiot and that doesn’t make them scammers).

Hope this helps. We are always happy to help. Check out real women wanting real men at Lovedbyher.com

Ukraine Girl: Poor but not Backwards

October 20, 2009 by Contributor

Girl on Cellphone Ukraine
The Ukraine is a poor country but it is by no means backwards. It has a cellphone service that is better than that in the USA. Their cellphone networks provide that all incoming calls are free and with your SIMS card you can change from network to network and switch any cell phone from any cell phone manufacture to any other network (unlike in the USA where certain phones only work with certain networks).

The public transportation in the Ukraine is awesome. They have trains, bus line that runs everywhere and runs on time, mini buses that augment the larger buses, trolley cars and subway systems. Most public transportation can be ridden for about 10 cents.

As you can see from the picture (girls like this are everywhere) this girl is wearing the latest Hollister type pants complete with the hip hugger fashion.

With a little money from the International Monetary Fund the Ukraine could be any western city. Unfortunately the Ukraine is a poor country. It was under the Former Soviet Union Rule where it was a step child to Russia and kept poor by those in power. So it is ironic that the citizens of the Ukraine are currently considering electing a Russian leaning president into office on January 10, 2010 after only four years of western influence. Should this happens it still remains to be seen what the long term effects such actions will have on the Ukraine already fragile economy.

Currently inflation is rampant in the Ukraine at a time when wages are low and unemployment high. The Ukraine is suffering from the international economic downturn and times are tough. However, for most Ukraine Citizens the fact that they are not starving to death and still able to pay their $100 apartment rental (the government still owns most apartments) is a sign that times are perhaps not as bad as western media portrays. Time will tell.

Melitopol Girl

Melitopol (Ukrainian: Мелітополь, translit. Melitopol’, Russian: Мелитополь) is a city in the Zaporizhia Oblast of the southeastern Ukraine. It is situated on the Molochna River that flows through the eastern edge of the city and into the Molochnyi Liman, which eventually joins the Sea of Azov. The city was formerly named Kyzyl-Yar until 1816, and Novoalexandrovka until 1842. Serving as the administrative center of the Melitopolskyi Raion, the city itself is directly subordinate to the oblast center. The estimated population as of 2007[update] is around 158,700. Generally, the Russian language is spoken in the city.

Melitopol is a pilot city of the Council of Europe and the European Comission Intercultural cities programme.

Historically

In ancient times, there was a small Noghai aul of Kyzyl-Yar where the modern Melitopol is settled. In July 1769, Russian military commanders built a redoubt there, and Zaporizhia Cossacks carried out their duty service there. On February 2, 1784, Ekaterina II issued the decree to create the Taurian Province on the lands that had been won back. The deputy of Novorossiya His Highness Prince Potemkin signed the relation to establish a town that very year – and Cossacks’ families and those of retired soldiers of Suvorov settled on the right bank of the Molochna River. In 1816, the settlement got the name sloboda of Novoalexandrovka. Its population was increasing due to the importation of peasants from the northern provinces of the Ukraine and Russia. On January 7, 1842, the sloboda was recognized as a town and received the new name of Melitopol after a port city of Melita (from Greek Μέλι (meli) – “honey”) which had been situated on the mouth of the Molochna River. At the end of the XIX century, the Honey-city[5] had been developed as a trade center – there were some banks, credit organizations and wholesale stores. The largest enterprises in the city at the time were the iron foundry and the Brothers Klassen’s machinery construction factory (1886), the railroad depot and the workshops.

Odessa.Odesa Ukraine Street Vendor

Odesa Street Vendor

Street Vendors seem to be in every country. I have been to Vietnam, Thailand, Ukraine, Canada, Mexico, Germany, Netherland and many more countries and what is always abounding is the human spirit. This street vendor picture was taken in Odessa.Odesa Ukraine and the guy was quite entertaining.

Ukraine is known for beautiful women that dress a little skimpy in the summer months and I can tell you that they have earned and deserve their reputation. I found the women not only approachable but they loved to try out their bad English with you.

Ukraine is definitely a country on my must return list.
