Arranged marriages have been around since Adam and Eve. But mail order marriages grew during the time that America was growing west. Men would run adds in eastern papers advertising for women to join them in the west. These mail order marriages resulted in thousands of unions during America’s western expansion.
Modernly, Mail Order Brides are typically foreign women that come to America to marry a man having met him on the internet and at least one face to face meeting (INS laws require one face to face meeting). Homeland security reports (on the INS site) that Mail Order Brides have a divorce rate of 20% compared to American with American divorce rate of 52%.
Nevertheless, stigma still attaches to the term: Mail Order Bride.

Mail Order Brides may be high risk but it is worth every penny. Who doesn’t want to be married to a beautiful and smart woman. If I had the money I would definitely marry a foreign mail order bride. In addition, I think that everyone has a half somewhere on the earth. What is to say that my half is not in the Ukraine or Russia or Columbia or anywhere else. I ABSOLUTELY WOULD MARRY A MAIL ORDER BRIDE. It is my life and my eternal happiness/love which is at stake. I’d be stupid not to.
