After the fall of the Soviet Union the government could no longer pay people there salaries in the Ukraine. Since everyone worked for the government and lived in government housing this created a small problem. First, you didn’t have to worry about being foreclosed on because there was no legal mechanism to foreclose on property and the goverment that owned your apartment/flat had collapsed.

However, people needed to purchase food. This created the start of capitalism in the Ukraine. People began to barter, sell and trade goods for money and other items of necessity. A good friend of mine was the head of the government programming department and was responsible for all computer security in 1990. In 1991 she was unemployed. Many of her co-workers continued to show up for work because they knew nothing else. Appositively, she started buying goods from other people and reselling them for a profit. People started selling everything. Some of this carries over now.
On my first trip I was in a grocery store and ask for a second plastic bag so I could double sack my groceries. (Afterall Walmart double bags for heavy items:-) But when the cashier ask for payment for the second bag I was caught off guard. However, I would soon learn that there is a thriving business selling plastic bags in the Ukraine. There are street vendors and Kiosk that do nothing but sell plain old white plastic bag. Below is a kiosk selling “fancy” plastic bags.
Similarly, there are local markets (in my area of the USA we call these “flea markets”) that sell clothing, household goods, personal hygiene products and everything else. People think nothing of trying a pair of pants on while standing in the aisle of one of these open markets. Occasionally, a merchant will hold up a towel so a young lady can try on a blouse but I have just as often seen women slip out of and into a blouse or skirt they may be trying on.
Another thing that you will observe in the Ukraine is piles and piles of trash. Sometimes this because of a under funded government trash collection service. But just as often the trash may be overflowing outside of apartment buildings and arises from inadequate number of dumpsters for the building and/or lack of funds to have the trash picked up more once a month or some other inadequate trash schedule.
Finally, if you like fresh bread or homemade cakes you will love the Ukraine open markets. People will bake something at home and bring it down to these markets to sell. I have eaten some very tasty foods at these markets and always try to pick up bread from the open market or the local kiosk.
