I have traveled extensively to Kiev Ukraine over the last 12 months and looks like another whirl wind again this year. I’m most familiar with the travel out of the central part of the country but have also travel to Kiev from both L.A. and the Eastern Seaboard.
Your big International Airports in the USA that have regular flights to Kiev are Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, L.A. and New York. It is likely you will hub through one of these airports anytime you are traveling to Kiev.
In addition, expect to have a stop over in London, Zurich, Prauge, Paris or Frankfut on most flights into Kiev.
Different airlines service these routes and the fares will vary depending on the time of the year that you are traveling. If you book in advance you can expect to pay as little as $600 (roundtrip) during the months of November – January (except for the big Christmas celebration on January 7) or in the spring (Mar – May) you can travel beween $1,000 – $1,300.00.
My favorite airline is to fly Air France out of Houston. It will stop in Zurich or Paris and you will need to switch Airlines. But once you switch off of Air France that is when the nightmare begins.
Typically, you will have to fly Ukraine Airlines into Kiev. It is a rickety airlines with undependable service and few carrier agreements with other airlines. For example Ukraine Airlines will often change the flight schedule, cancel a flight or overbook flights causing you to have to wait for the next available flight of UKRAINE AIRLINES. That is right they don’t put you on another airline you are told to wait for the next flight of Ukraine Airlines. Made you have to sleep in the airport . . .bummer. Welcome to Ukraine Airlines.
Compare that service with Air France that has movies, champagne, face towels, sleeping maskets and blankets and pillows for everyone. With Air France if they caused you to miss a flight they roll out the red carpet and really work hard to get you where you need to go . . . . at their expense.
However, the down side to Air France is they fly out of Houston IAH. The airport is huge, not well signed and the immigration area is more akin to a cattle round up then a orderly immigration proces.
Hope this helps. I’ll be glad to answer any other questions you might have on travel to or from the states and Kiev.
