Last night my mail order bride arrived in Houston. I had flown her from Kiev to Houston via New York. When I met her at the gate she was every bit as beautiful as I remembered her 6 months ago. But very, very scared.
On her layover in New York she had tried to get gate instructions and New Yorkers kept blowing her off. From what I can get from the broken English she became very scared.
When we picked up her bags the shrink wrap had been torn off (in Kiev they put this on the luggage to keep the local baggage handlers from stealing items) by TSA looking for bombs. What TSA found was a wonderful bottle of wine that my mail order bride was bringing as a gift for my family and TSA confiscated it. Not understanding my bride was visibly upset.
When we left the airport we stopped at Sonic to get her some good American Food (burgers, fries, coke) which my new step daughter loved but her mother barely ate. What I didn’t expect was my Mail Order Bride wanted to call her mother and when she got her mother on the phone my mail order bride burst out crying.
When we got home her cell phone had gone dead and of course this started her crying more. (Her phone can’t recharge because the electricity outlet is different in the Ukraine vs. USA). I gave her my cell phone and she called her mother, her sister, her father crying, crying, crying. Eventually her mother stopped answering the calls. The shock of not being able to talk the language and everything foreign was just overwhelming to by bride.
This morning things were a little better in that my mail order bride had resigned herself to the fact that her curling iron and hair dryer/blower was also not going to work. She was joking with her daughter and hugged me when I climbed into bed with them (they slept in my marital bed like to scared sheep and I slept on a cot in the front room) for a couple of minutes.
I teased her about last night and ask her if she wanted to swim home and she took it with a good sense of humor. Her sister had text her and told her that talking to the USA for 1 minute had cost the sister $5 USD (It cost 13 cents a minute to call from my cell phone to the Ukraine).
Things are going much smoother now. We are getting ready to go purchase a new hair dryer etc. and put her on my family plan for her telephone (probably will have to purchase new phones). I’m also going to look for the electricity adapter to see if I can get a conversion like I use for my USA computer when in the Ukraine.
More later.
